Architect V.S. Thurairajah

Architect V.S. Thurairajah has made a significant contribution to the field of Architecture in Sri Lanka over a period of forty years.

When Architecture as profession was hardly known in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) Thurairajah choose as his carrier. The only university in Ceylon then, the Colombo University, did not have a faculty of Architecture. A student of Architecture had then to either go to Bombay or the United Kingdom to follow a course in Architecture. In 1948 Thurairajah joined the JJ School of Arts in Bombay. He completed a three – year course and returned to Ceylon and joined the Public Works Department as a Junior Architect in 1951. The Department sent him for further studies to London on a Colombo plan Scholarship in 1954. He followed a course in Architecture at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London and obtained the AA Diploma in 1957. He also followed a post graduate course in Tropical Architecture.

I know Jaffna will be now the centre of attraction for lot of people... though the country is not doing well in economy terms right now.... very soon there will be a boom..... possibly due to some foreign sponsored projects... i dont think the gov will be in a position to do some projects right now unless it wants to show the world that they r doing something... unlike the UNP peace talk time, the diaspora will be little slow in pumping money in to Jaffna for development....

however within an year or so i think there will be a big boom..DO you really think that 'people of the place' will have any say in these works? i mean in gov projects? they wil come with their own consultants like people who have political pulling and also come with their contractors.. we will have no say... but in Private projects there can be some prospects for local people to be involved...I am happy that you have already getting ready for the future... i am also happy that you are trying gearing up to do constructions... you may do the basic ground work and wait without investing much.. also dont bank on this idea too much and loose hopes in case if doesnt work out on time as you expect... just take this as a precautionary indication...Well... we need to do something... in terms of development control and planning... do you think we have enough resources??

i mean the few professionals who are really from the area alone cannot work out a major plan... we need to gear up with some experts and take the way forward... i am really skeptical in the Gov letting some common people to do anything as there is no political strength on our side... may be can start influencing from UDA side... that will be the most possible option the gov will go for... again there is no adequate Tamil representation in UDA...

i am not really sure how to get about it... i am sure you will be also in the same dilemma.... we can only talk about our sentiments but we are at Govt's mercy... Gov will never entertain any diaspora involvement in the development proposals... the maximum they will entertain is only the money......................, he is taking some Tamil-Sinhala reconciliation initiations... he thinks that Tamils should be given a due place....You know that i am not in the country... i can get involved in any possible way with the distance limitations...when you have time read the following article.. something to do with the Jaffna architecture..
